Microplastics in Poland Spring water: natural source, plastic bottle.

Poland Spring is Nestlé's (now BlueTriton's) natural spring water brand, sourced from multiple springs across Maine. The source water is genuinely spring-fed, minimally processed, and often tastes noticeably different from purified brands. That doesn't change the bottle. The bottle is still PET. And PET is still the primary source of the plastic that shows up in the water.

The research

The 2018 SUNY-Fredonia/Orb Media study that tested 259 bottles across 11 brands included natural spring brands alongside purified ones. The result was the same across both: 93% of samples had detectable microplastics, averaging 325 particles per liter. Poland Spring samples specifically showed contamination in line with the category average.

Natural spring or purified or distilled — the category label describes what the water was before bottling. The plastic in the final product is overwhelmingly from what happens after.

Why the source doesn't protect you

Spring water is naturally low in contaminants. It goes into a PET bottle. PET sheds particles over time. The bottle ships, sits in a warehouse, sits on a shelf, sits in your car. Every step adds shedding. By the time you drink it, the water quality at-bottling is no longer the water quality in-bottle.

Test your own bottle

The at-home kit runs two tests for $50. Open a fresh bottle of Poland Spring, pour 100 mL, stain, filter, glow. Compare to your tap water. Upload the photo and get an automatic count.

Practical takeaways

  • Filtered tap water at home is usually cleaner than bottled, even from premium natural sources.
  • If you buy Poland Spring, buy fresh and drink it fresh. Old PET has had more time to shed.
  • Glass-bottled spring water exists (Mountain Valley, Saratoga) — it costs more and ships heavier, but no PET.
  • Don't refill PET bottles from your tap. The bottle is single-use designed, and shedding accelerates with use.
